Today we take you to one of the most magical place in Tuscany, San Gimignano, the city of beautiful towers… But what to see in San Gimignano maybe if you have only one day available?
Let’s start our tour of what is at the heart of this city: the Piazza del Duomo, a place that was once the hub of political and religious life. The thing that will strike you when you get here, it will be the abundance of buildings surrounding the square: The old palace of the Podestà, Rognosa Tower and the Tower Chigi, the twin towers of the Salvucci and the new Palazzo del Podesta with the Loggia del Comune next to the Torre Grossa, by the way … Do you understand now why it is called the city of beautiful towers? And you think that in medieval times it counted well 72, while now they are 14, a real Manhattan of the Middle Ages! At the center of this beautiful square is the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, better known as the Duomo di San Gimignano, its Romanesque facade, beautiful and simple at the same time, it hides some real marvels inside: on the first wall a wonderful cycle of frescoes on the stories of the Old Testament, the Siena Bartolo di Fredi, on the wall opposite those of the New Testament, that seem to belong to the school of Simone Martini. Still inside the Cathedral you can admire the Chapel of Santa Fina a wonderful fresco by Ghirlandaio.
But the famous squares in San Gimignano are two…
In fact, after Piazza del Duomo we bring in Piazza della Cisterna! The peculiar name is due to the octagonal shaft that is at the center of the square, and it was the ancient seat of the shops, the heart of the country’s trade, In this place you can admire other famous towers: the towers of Becci and Cugnanesi and the Devil’s Tower!
If you are brave and not easily impressed, go and visit the Museum of Torture of San Gimignano, truly one of a kind! With a single ticket you can also visit the Museum of the Death Penalty, a visit suggestive and rich in history.
We go up and go to the Rocca of Montestaffoli, a place you must see in San Gimignano, built in 1353 by the Sienese in defence to the attacks of Florence.
It remains very little of the ancient fortress but the view from up here really leaves you breathless for its beauty.
After all the walking you will definitely be hungry, in San Gimignano are many locals with the typical cuisine, but do not go away from this town if you have not tasted his yellow gold, saffron, accompanied by a good glass of Vernaccia!
